FOB Douala vs CIF is an important decision when buying timber from Cameroon because the two options change who arranges the main ocean freight, insurance and part of the shipment management.
The right choice depends mainly on your experience with international shipping, freight rates and how much control you want over the shipment.
What Does FOB Douala Mean?
With an FOB quotation, the timber is supplied for export through the named port, with the seller handling the agreed export-side obligations. The buyer arranges the main ocean freight and normally controls the shipping relationship after the agreed point of delivery.
For an experienced importer with established freight forwarders or shipping lines, this can be useful.
You can compare freight rates yourself and manage the shipment according to your existing logistics arrangements.
What Does CIF Mean?
With CIF, the seller arranges the ocean freight and insurance to the named destination port.
Instead of receiving only a timber price plus the costs up to Douala, the buyer receives a quotation that includes the main freight and insurance to the agreed destination.
This can be more convenient for buyers who do not regularly arrange shipments from Cameroon.
CIF does not mean that every destination cost is included. Import clearance, duties, taxes and other destination charges normally remain the buyer’s responsibility.
FOB Douala or CIF: Which Is Better?
Neither option is automatically better.
FOB may suit you if:
- You regularly import timber
- You have a freight forwarder or shipping line
- You can negotiate competitive ocean freight
- You want greater control over the shipping arrangement
- You are comfortable managing the shipment after loading
CIF may suit you if:
- You are buying from Cameroon for the first time
- You do not have a shipping agent in Cameroon
- You want one quotation covering timber, freight and insurance
- You prefer the exporter to coordinate the main shipment
- You want to compare the delivered port cost more easily
Compare the Total Cost, Not Just the Timber Price
A lower FOB timber price does not necessarily mean a lower final cost.
With FOB, you need to consider the additional costs you will arrange yourself, including ocean freight and insurance.
With CIF, the supplier includes these costs in the quotation, but you should still ask for a clear breakdown so you understand what is included.
For example, if one supplier quotes:
FOB Douala: $X per m³
and another offers:
CIF Antwerp: $Y per m³
the figures cannot be compared directly.
You need to calculate the total landed cost under the same basis.
Ask the Supplier to State Exactly What the Price Includes
Before accepting a quotation, confirm:
- Timber price
- Quantity and volume
- Export preparation
- Port charges included in the agreed term
- Ocean freight
- Insurance
- Destination port
- Any excluded destination charges
- Incoterm and named place
This prevents a common problem in international purchasing: assuming that “CIF” means the timber will be delivered to your warehouse.
It does not.
One Important Point About FOB and Containers
FOB is widely used in timber export quotations from Cameroon, but buyers should pay attention to how the container is handed over.
Under Incoterms 2020, FOB is intended for sea or inland-waterway delivery where the goods are delivered on board the vessel. For containerized cargo delivered to a terminal before loading, ICC guidance indicates that FCA may be more appropriate.
That does not mean a Cameroon supplier cannot quote FOB. It means the buyer and seller should clearly agree on the actual delivery point, responsibilities and risk transfer rather than relying on the abbreviation alone.
Which Should You Request From a Cameroon Timber Exporter?
If you already manage international freight, ask for an FOB Douala quotation and arrange the ocean shipment through your existing logistics provider.
If you want the exporter to coordinate the main freight, request a CIF quotation to your destination port.
You can also request both.
Comparing FOB and CIF quotations can show whether the supplier’s freight arrangement is competitive and which option gives your business the better overall cost.
FOB and CIF Timber From Cameroon
Jam Wood Export supplies timber from Cameroon for international buyers and can provide export quotations based on the buyer’s requirements.
When requesting a quotation, provide the timber species, product type, dimensions, grade, quantity and destination port. State whether you want FOB Douala or CIF so the quotation is prepared on the correct basis.
For a first shipment, requesting both options can be particularly useful. You can then compare the supplier’s FOB price with the CIF price and decide whether to use your own freight arrangement or the supplier’s.
