When buying sawn timber from Cameroon, the quoted volume affects the order value, shipment planning, and the quantity you expect to receive. Knowing how to calculate cubic metres helps you check supplier quotations and compare timber offers accurately.
The formula for calculating timber volume
For rectangular sawn timber, calculate the volume of one piece using its length, width, and thickness:
Volume (m³) = length (m) × width (m) × thickness (m)
If the length is measured in metres and the width and thickness in millimetres, use:
Volume (m³) = length (m) × width (mm) × thickness (mm) ÷ 1,000,000
Example: calculating the volume of one board
Suppose a board measures:
- Length: 4 metres
- Width: 200 millimetres
- Thickness: 50 millimetres
The calculation is:
4 × 200 × 50 ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.04 m³ per board
For 100 boards of the same dimensions:
0.04 × 100 = 4 m³ total
How to calculate orders with different dimensions
If an order contains several timber sizes, calculate each line separately and then add the volumes together.
| Timber size (thickness × width) | Length | Quantity | Total volume |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 × 200 mm | 4 m | 100 | 4.00 m³ |
| 25 × 150 mm | 3 m | 200 | 2.25 m³ |
| 50 × 100 mm | 3 m | 50 | 0.75 m³ |
| Total | 350 | 7.00 m³ |
This method is useful when a shipment contains different board sizes or dimensions.
Confirm which dimensions the supplier uses
The formula is straightforward, but the measurement basis matters. Before accepting a quotation, confirm:
- Rough-sawn or finished dimensions: Planing can reduce the final thickness and width.
- Actual or nominal dimensions: Do not assume the stated size is the measured size.
- Length and width tolerances: Agree on permitted variations.
- Quantity and tally: Confirm how pieces are counted and how the total volume is recorded.
- Commercial measurement method: Make sure the supplier and buyer use the same basis for calculating invoiced volume.
For an export order, request a clear breakdown by species, dimensions, quantity, and cubic metres. This makes it easier to reconcile the quotation, packing list, and final shipment tally.
Does cubic metres tell you how much timber fits in a container?
Not by itself. The calculated cubic metres of the timber are different from the container’s internal capacity. Actual loading depends on the timber dimensions, packing arrangement, weight limits, and other shipment conditions.
For container planning, see our guide on how much timber fits in a 20ft container.
Request a clearly measured timber quotation
When requesting a quotation from Jam Wood Export, specify the species, timber dimensions, quantity, required quality, drying condition, and destination port. Ask for the volume calculation to be itemised if the order contains several sizes.
