Padouk Wood

Padauk wood, a tropical hardwood, has a characteristic bright red color, which, however, turns gray very quickly. It is a very durable wood that requires no preservative treatment, making it an excellent material from an ecological perspective.

The padauk is a large tree of the dense, humid forests of tropical and equatorial Africa. It reaches a height of 50 m and a diameter of 1.5 m. The trunk is cylindrical, usually straight, and has slender buttresses that can rise up to 5 m high. The bark is gray, thin, and scaly. Padauk wood is a more or less bright red, with a distinct, whitish sapwood. However, the exotic padauk species does not retain its red color and very quickly turns gray, although it is possible to treat the wood to keep it red.

Red in color, quickly turning grey-brown in the light, padauk is an exotic wood that is very durable and requires no preservative treatment. The dual economic and ecological advantages of using this wood should be noted. It can be used untreated in marine or brackish water environments, but only in temperate and cold climates. Thanks to its characteristics, tropical padauk wood is suitable to hydraulic works, including in marine environments, to the exterior joinery, to shipbuilding but is also used in  interior joinery, cabinetmaking and for various other purposes.
